Looking into alternative Forges (GitHub, GitLab, etc)

Hi everyone,

for while now I was thinking but not really doing anything about it, to move my git projects to another forge. I believe forge is the right terminology here. Many of us are using GitHub, it feels like the default go-to option, but there are more options and some might even fit you better for what you want.

I did not do any big research on what the main differences are, everyone can do their own research on it, but I wanted to list some options here.

  • GitLab
  • Gitea
  • Codeberg
  • Forgejo

I was thinking, why not just use Forgejo and selfhost it myself? Then the data truly is mine and not owned by some other company. Well, besides the storage and server provider I would be choosing for it.

It has an installation guide and doesn’t look too complicated, so why not?

Yhh and you could just host it on oracle or hostinger better still a mini desktop

Yeah it is something I was thinking about. I just haven’t really done the jump yet.
